State Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representative Monica Robb Blasdel has expressed her support for the Ohio House's recent approval of the Human Trafficking Prevention Act. This legislation aims to increase criminal penalties for human trafficking, kidnapping, and abduction in Ohio.
Ohio is among the states with the highest number of reported human trafficking cases, predominantly involving sex trafficking. Under current state law, those convicted of human trafficking face a prison term ranging from 10 to 15 years.
Robb Blasdel acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement officers in combating human trafficking within Ohio. She specifically mentioned the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force, describing it as "the collaborative law enforcement effort in the Mahoning Valley." She stated, "This legislation will increase penalties for human trafficking, kidnapping, and abduction, and will create extra penalties when these crimes are committed against minors and those with developmental disabilities. This bill will have a huge impact on our communities and the safety of all Ohioans."
The proposed Human Trafficking Prevention Act seeks to extend penalties for human trafficking offenses from a minimum of 10 years to at least 15 years in prison. Additionally, it aims to enhance protections for victims under 18 or those who are developmentally disabled by increasing sentences to between 25 years and life imprisonment.
House Bill 47 has passed through the House and is now set to be reviewed by the Ohio Senate.
