House Bill 289, aimed at strengthening Ohio's Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORN) system, has been signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine. The announcement was made by State Representative Monica Robb Blasdel from Columbiana.

The legislation, co-sponsored by State Representative D.J. Swearingen of Huron, seeks to ensure that sex offenders remain compliant with registration requirements. It pauses the tracking time for offenders until their information is correctly updated in the system, aligning with the registry's original intent.

"Passing this legislation is a big step in making sure our communities are safe from these predators," said Blasdel. "I’m thankful for the support of the legislature and my joint-sponsor Rep. Swearingen to get this over the finish line."

According to the Attorney General’s office, there are approximately 500 noncompliant sex offenders currently in Ohio.
