State Representative Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) has announced that more than $6 million will be allocated to three waterfront projects in Mahoning County. This funding is part of the Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative.
The projects set to receive funding in Mahoning County include:
1. City of Struthers, which will receive $1,188,264. These funds will be used at the Struthers Community River Launch to construct a stairway with a kayak groove for direct river access, a pavilion and shelters, and a natural play area. Additional facilities will also be installed to better accommodate recreational visitors.
2. Village of Lowellville, which has been awarded $936,960. The funds will be utilized to build a canoe livery, pavilions, and a play facility at the Lowellville Waterfront Park and Canoe Livery. An extensive trail through the wooded riverfront connecting to downtown will also be added.
3. City of Youngstown is set to receive $3,891,475. The funds will go towards improvements at Spring Commons Park including active play equipment for all ages and abilities, as well as pavilions and shelters. A riverfront path and boulder terrace will also be added as a beach stop-off point for kayakers visiting the park.
“These investments will promote activity and improve our waterfronts,” said Cutrona. “It is important that we create spaces where communities can gather together and enjoy the outdoors.”
In total, over $51 million was awarded through the Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative. This initiative primarily focuses on funding projects in Ohio's riverfront and lakefront communities throughout Ohio’s Appalachian region.
