Avalon University Offers 50 fully funded tuition medical school scholarships to displaced medical students

Everyone, say hello to Avalon University School of Medicine (AUSOM)’s Dr. Andrii “Andrew” Shmarhalov!

Dr. Andrew, current Chair of the Mind, Brain & Behavior department, and Associate Professor of Neuroscience is a highly respected member of the AUSOM faculty. Dr. Andrew received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D) from Luhansk State Medical University and Ph.D. in Anatomy from Kharkiv National Medical University in Ukraine.

When asked what drew Dr. Andrew to AUSOM, he stated that he was drawn to Avalon’s unique atmosphere and collaborative culture. As part of Avalon’s professional team, Dr. Andrew began conversations with AUSOM’s decision makers to discuss the question, “what can Avalon do to help support displaced medical students in Ukraine?”

In response, AUSOM founded a scholarship program that grants medical school scholarships to 50 students who transfer to Avalon from a Ukrainian medical school. These 50 medical school scholarships cover tuition only for the Premed (PM1-PM4) and Basic Science (MD1-MD4) semesters.

“One of Avalon’s key values is empathy, so naturally, the university could not stand aside when hundreds of medical students found themselves in a threatening situation. We had to extend a helping hand. We sent a clear message to Ukrainian students that they can count on AUSOM for support” stated Dr. Andrew.

Dr. Andrew, a native of Ukraine, sees many benefits to the scholarship program. One stated benefit is: opportunities for clinical experience in ACGME affiliated hospitals located in the United States. “This is an opportunity not previously available to medical students from Ukraine,” states Dr. Andrew.

AUSOM is thrilled to announce that so far 14 medical students have received medical school scholarships through this scholarship program. Dr. Andrew states “the students who receive these medical school scholarships have a good opportunity to get high-quality medical education at an accredited school.” AUSOM’s medical education opens paths for a successful career in any country of the world.
