Lake-to-River Science Day | Youngstown State University
Lake-to-River Science Day | Youngstown State University
Sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Sciences and Youngstown State University, the District 15 Lake-to-River Science Day 2023 will be held in-person 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 18 at Stambaugh Stadium on the YSU campus.
Open to students in grades 5-12, Lake-to-River Science Day is one of 16 regional science fairs in Ohio that are sanctioned by the Ohio Academy of Science. The region represented by the Lake-to-River district comprises Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana Counties. Science Day is an annual event that attracts hundreds of science research project entries from public, private and parochial students. Students need to have been recognized as having a superior science fair project at their local schools in order to participate. Projects that are judged as "Superior quality" at the district level are then eligible to participate in State Science Day.
"Science fairs give students hands-on experience with science and the scientific method. Students must develop a hypothesis, design an experimental protocol, and collect data," explained Michael Serra, associate professor of Chemical and Biological Sciences at YSU and director of District 15. "They must analyze and interpret data and present their findings. They hone their critical thinking skills and develop their skills in scientific writing and public speaking. Ultimately, science fairs improve their success in STEM disciplines."
