The Ohio House of Representatives has approved a bill to establish the fourth Thursday of January as NASA Day of Remembrance. State Representative Monica Robb Blasdel (R-New Waterford) announced the passage of House Bill 293, which seeks to create an annual occasion for Ohioans to honor those who lost their lives in space exploration and scientific research, including the crews from Apollo 1 and the Challenger and Columbia space shuttles.

“Designating this day reminds us that progress in exploration often comes with great sacrifice, and we owe these pioneers our lasting gratitude,” said Robb Blasdel.

Ohio is recognized as the birthplace of aviation and is notable for being fourth among U.S. states in producing astronauts, with 26 individuals from Ohio having traveled to space.

The bill will now proceed to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
