State Representative Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) is taking action to combat human trafficking in Ohio. Cutrona has cosponsored the Human Trafficking Prevention Act, a piece of legislation aimed at increasing criminal penalties for human trafficking, kidnapping, and abduction.

In Ohio, the number of reported cases of human trafficking is alarmingly high. Cutrona expressed his concern, stating, "The fact that Ohio has the fourth-highest number of reported cases of human trafficking in the nation is frightening and unacceptable." He emphasized the need for stronger penalties, particularly for cases involving sex trafficking, which account for over 97% of reported cases.

The Human Trafficking Prevention Act goes beyond increasing penalties. It also expands the scope of penalties to include victims under the age of 18. Currently, penalties apply only to victims who are 13 years old or younger. This expansion ensures that all victims, regardless of their age, receive the protection and justice they deserve.

Under the proposed legislation, if the victim is an adult, the minimum prison term would be fifteen years, with a maximum term of life imprisonment. For victims who are minors, the minimum term would be increased to twenty-five years, also with a maximum term of life imprisonment. These stricter penalties aim to deter potential offenders and provide a sense of justice for the victims.

The Human Trafficking Prevention Act is currently awaiting assignment to a House committee. Once assigned, the legislation will undergo a thorough review and discussion among lawmakers. Cutrona's cosponsorship demonstrates his commitment to addressing the issue of human trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of Ohio residents.

In the fight against human trafficking, it is crucial to have lawmakers like Cutrona who are dedicated to enacting laws that protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. The Human Trafficking Prevention Act is a significant step towards combating this heinous crime and sending a strong message that Ohio will not tolerate such exploitation.

Cutrona summarized the importance of the legislation, stating, "We must do everything we can to ensure justice for all victims of trafficking." With the support of legislators like Cutrona, Ohio can work towards eradicating human trafficking and creating a safer future for its residents.
